Potomac Nationals News Release

TODAY: The Potomac Nationals will look to regain sole possession of first place in the Northern Division when they play game two of this pivotal four-game series against the surging Wilmington Blue Rocks. The "Blue Crew" tied a franchise record yesterday by winning their 11th consecutive game to leap into a share of first place in the division which had been occupied by the P-Nats since July 3. The P-Nats have lost four of their last five contests after finishing off their most successful month of the year by going 21-8 in July. Potomac once led the North by as many as 4.5 games back on July 27.

TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Eduardo Paulino, 23, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Kansas City Royals in 2006 and hails from Nagua, Dominican Republic. This is Paulino's fourth season in the Royals' system and prior to this year, the right-hander compiled a record of 17-7 with a 3.30 ERA in 48 games/40 starts. In 2006, he was named the Royals' Dominican Summer League Pitcher of the Year after finishing second in the league in wins and turned in a 9-1 campaign. He was also a DSL All-Star that year and walked just 12 batters in his nearly 70.0 innings pitched. Paulino continued to move up the ladder in 2007 when he joined the Rookie-level Burlington club where he pitched exclusively as a starter for the first time in his pro career. That year, he went 3-2 with a 4.68 ERA and held right-handed batters to just a .176 batting average against. Last season, he set career-bests in ERA (3.68), innings pitched (100.1), and strikeouts (80) while pitching for the Low-A Burlington Bees of the Midwest League. He was 5-4 in the Midwest League in 17 games (11 starts) and was even crowned the Pitcher of the Week in mid-July when he combined on an three-hit shutout of the Clinton LumberKings while fanning seven in 8.0 IP in a 15-0 victory on July 7th.

This year, Paulino is 5-6 with a 4.24 ERA in 20 games (16 starts) with the Blue Rocks with wins in each of his last two appearances. Originally in a piggyback situation with teammate Ray Liotta, Paulino has proven to be quite durable in the second half as he's gone six or more innings in his last five outings. He's done quite well from pitcher-friendly Frawley Stadium where the righty has gone 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA while holding opposing batters to just a .217 average. He has not faced Potomac since May 5 and in two appearances against the P-Nats, Paulino has yielded five earned runs on 10 hits including two homers in 7.1 IP (6.14 ERA).
