Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Kinston, NC (August 6, 2009) - The midsummer struggles continued for Salem on Thursday as the Red Sox were blanked 2-0 by Kinston at Grainger Stadium. Russell Young and Kyle Weiland waged an impressive duel on the mound, but Kinston's Young was just a smidge better, allowing just two hits over six and a third innings. Weiland's record slipped to a deceptive 3-9, despite the fact that he tossed his sixth quality start of the year. Weiland allowed just one run on four hits over six innings, striking out five Indians while absorbing the loss.
In fact, Weiland had the bases empty with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and was one out away from sending it to the seventh with the score still a stalemate. Kinston's Adam Davis prolonged the inning with a double down the right field line for the first extra-base hit of the game for either club. With a runner in scoring position for just the second time, Lonnie Chisenhall proceeded to smack an RBI double into right-center field, giving Kinston a 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, Davis came through again for Kinston, crushing a solo home run off the scoreboard in right field to make it 2-0. The dinger off Salem's Robert Coello was an unnecessary insurance policy, for Salem's offense was unable to gain any steam against the Indians staff as Young, Kyle Landis, and Santo Frias combined for the three-hit shutout.
Salem's three singles from David Mailman, Che-Hsuan Lin, and Kris Negron each came with two outs, and only once all game did a Red Sox baserunner reach second base. When Lin stole second in the sixth inning, Jon Hee flew out to center to end the threat, Salem's only at-bat with a runner in scoring position in the ballgame.
Losers of 10 of their last 11 games, the Red Sox were blanked for the 13th time in 2009. In addition, their six-game winning streak against the Kinston Indians came to a close.
Salem and Kinston meet for game two of the four-game set on Friday night at 7:00. Dave McKae gets the start for the Red Sox, while the Indians starter remains TBA.
