YORK, PA- The York Revolution defeated the Somerset Patriots 14-9 in front of 4,725 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Friday evening. York struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead when designated hitter Kala Ka'aihue led off with a solo home run (1) to left center.
Somerset scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Second baseman Matt Hagen ripped a one out triple down the first base line and came home when designated hitter Josh Pressley followed with an RBI single to center. Third baseman Jeff Nettles then lined a single to right and after a fielding error by the Revolution allowed the runners to move up a base, Nettles scored on another Revolution fielding error on a two out ground ball to short off the bat of catcher Jason Belcher.
The Revolution answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead at 4-2. Shortstop Jermy Acey reached with one out on a Patriots' fielding error on a fly ball to left and moved to third on a single to right by third baseman Matt Padgett. Rightfielder Ryan Goleski then hit a two run triple off the left field wall and catcher Josh Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly to center.
York added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 6-2. The Revolution loaded the bases on a lead off bunt single to third by second baseman Keoni DeRenne, a one out single to right by leftfielder Tom Collaro and a two out walk by Acey. Padgett then hit a two run single to right center that plated DeRenne and Collaro.
The Revolution scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 7-2 when centerfielder Kennard Jones hit a one out double to right center, advanced to third on a balk and came home on a Patriots' throwing error on a stolen base attempt.
York made it 8-2 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Acey drew a two out walk and scored on an RBI double to right center by Padgett.
The Patriots plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the York lead to 8-4. Centerfielder Sean Smith reached on a Revolution throwing error on a ground ball to third and moved to third on a single to center by Hagen . Nettles then drove in Smith with a one out sacrifice fly to center and after a two out single to center by pinch hitter Kevin Kotch, Belcher lined an RBI single to right.
The Revolution then sent 12 men to the plate and scored for six runs to take a commanding 14-4 lead. Ka'aihue started the scoring with a one out RBI double and Acey followed with a two run double to left. After York loaded the bases, Jones hit a two out two run double into the right field corner and then first baseman P.J. Rose capped the scoring with an RBI single to left.
Somerset rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the final 14-9. Rightfielder Mike Rodriguez started the scoring with a two run home run (3) to right and after a walk and a single, Kotch lined an RBI double to right center. Belcher then followed with a two run single to center that finished the scoring.
Revolution starter Daryl Harang (4-8) picked up the win, allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits while walking none and striking out two in 7.1 innings pitched. Patriots' starter Brian Adams (9-6) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, on ten hits while walking one and striking out three in 5.1 innings pitched.
With the loss the Patriots dropped to 9-6 in the second half and 52-33 overall while the Revolution improved to 6-10 and 30-56 overall.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until July 28th at 7:05 pm when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark to take on the Camden Riversharks.
