
Ducks Sign Cate

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 24, 2009) - The Long Island Ducks today announced that Troy Cate has been signed by the Toronto Blue Jays organization and assigned to their Double-A affiliate, New Hampshire of the Eastern League. The starter became the Flock's first seven-game winner on Wednesday, July 22 and was impressive down the stretch winning four straight with a 3.52 ERA over that span. Cate becomes the fifth Duck in 2009 to sign with an affiliated club.
"We couldn't be happier for Troy and wish him the best in this great opportunity," says Ducks manager Gary Carter. "He was really dialed in as of late and we're excited that he will have the chance to get back to the big leagues."
The California native appeared in 15 games (13 starts) for the Ducks in 2009, compiling a 7-2 record with a 3.23 ERA. He fired 78 innings, yielding 30 hits and 18 walks, while striking out 55.
Last season, the lefthander split his time between four teams, Huntsville (AA) and Nashville (AAA) in the Brewers system, Sacramento (AAA, Athletics) and Orange County of the Golden League. Troy posted a 4-2 record with a 3.60 ERA in 15 appearances between Huntsville and Nashville, appeared in 12 games for Sacramento and posted a 1.15 ERA in three games for Orange County (two starts).
Prior to 2008, the southpaw spent two years in the Cardinals organization, earning a call up to the Major Leagues on May 17th, 2007. Troy appeared in 14 games for the Cardinals that season, pitching 16 innings and posting a 3.38 ERA. Troy played his college baseball at Brigham Young University and was selected in the sixth round of the 2002 draft by the Seattle Mariners.
