Camden Riversharks News Release
Camden strung together four singles and a pair of walks for five runs in the third inning as the Riversharks downed the Lancaster Barnstormers, 9-4, in front of 5,946 at Campbell's Field on the first day of Tom Herr's new regime as Barnstormers manager.
The loss was Lancaster's fifth straight and dropped the club into a tie for third in the Freedom Division.
Camden went six up, six down in the first two innings against Zack Parker, who entered with a career 0.51 ERA against the Riversharks.
The third inning was entirely different, that one inning per game where Parker seems to struggle.
David Housel led off with a five-pitch walk and moved up on Brian Finegan's slow grounder to short. Frederick Torres banged a ground single through the right side, scoring Housel for a 1-0 lead. Chris Walker forced Torres at second, then stole second. Wayne Lydon picked him up with a single to left and took second on the throw home. Bryant Nelson singled to right to drive home a third run, and Jon Knott walked. Vito Chiaravalloti singled to left, driving home Nelson. Knott scored as well when Michael Campbell's throw bounced beyond catcher Jed Morris.
The Riversharks struck for three more runs in the fifth. Lydon tripled home Walker with a drive into right center. He would score on Knott's double to left which chased Parker. Brian Burgamy singled home the third run off reliever Joanniel Montero, who made his Atlantic League debut with 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
L.J. Biernbaum slugged a solo homer to right in the sixth off Dewon Brazelton (5-4), cutting the lead to 8-2. Cesar Suarez and Biernbaum singled home runs in the seventh to get Lancaster within four. Camden's bullpen silenced the comeback effort.
The Barnstormers will return home on Tuesday to face Newark on Negro League tribute night.
NOTES: Jason Scobie (4-6) will face Josh Brey (3-4) on Saturday at 5:35.
