Cutters Blank Renegades

Williamsport defeated Hudson Valley on Wednesday by the final score of 4-2 completeing a three game sweep of the Renegades. The Cutters have now won a season high five games in a row and remain tied with Mahoning Valley for first place in the Pinckney Division.

Hudson Valley took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th as Renegade SS Tyler Bortnick led off the inning by reaching second base on a throwing error by Cutter SS Jeremy Barnes. Bortnick moved to third on a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly to right.

In the bottom of the 5th the Crosscutters rallied to plate two runs and take the lead as Cutter DH Ryan Gugel, in his first game for Williamsport, got things started with a walk. 3B Alan Schoenberger hit his second double of the season to left, allowing Gugel to advance to third. With CF Carl Uhl batting, Hudson Valley RHP Jordi Amargos uncorked a wild pitch that scored Gugel and tied the game at one. Schoenberger, who advanced to third on the wild pitch, scored the go-ahead run on a Uhl sacrifice fly to center.

In the 6th, 1B Stephen Batts gave the Cutters some added run support with a 2-run home run staking Williamsport to a 4-1 lead. C Sebastian Valle hit a double to lead off the inning and then scored on the Batts homer. Valle who came into the game leading the league in batting (.368) went 3 for 4 on the night with two doubles, raising his average to .388.

Hudson Valley threatened in the top of the 7th as they pushed a run across in the frame when the Cutters were not able to complete a double-play. 2B Adam Buschini's relay throw was a bit low on the double-play attempt as it squirted away from first baseman Stephen Batts allowing Renegade 2B Bennett Davis to score Hudson Valley's second unearned run of the night.

Cutters LHP Korey Noles (0-0, 0.00) made his first appearance of the 2009 season for Williamsport in the 8th inning when he was called in to relieve LHP Spencer Arroyo (2-0, 2.77) who pitched two innings allowing three hits and an unearned run. Noles who pitched in Williamsport during the 2008 season was called up on Monday from the GCL Phillies and was able to induce an inning ending 1-6-3 double-play grounder spoiling the ‘Gades chances narrowing the lead.

RHP Justin Long came on to pitch a perfect 9th to pick up his league-leading sixth save of the season preserving starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone's (2-3, 4.78) second win of the season. Pettibone, who had lost his last three starts, was back to his old form as he allowed an unearned run on four hits while striking out six in five innings.
