Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, P.A. (July 22, 2009) - The Renegades were swept by the Williamsport Crosscutters after dropping the finale of the three-game series 4-2 Wednesday night at historic Bowman Field. The sweep is just the Renegades second three-game series sweep of the season with the first coming against the Brooklyn Cyclones earlier this season.
The Crosscutters starter, Jonathan Pettibone (2-3, 4.78) recorded his second win of the season as he hurled five innings and gave up just one run and struck out six. Renegades reliever, Jordi Amargos was tagged for the loss after he threw 1.2 innings of four-hit, two-run baseball.
Hudson Valley etched the first run of the game in the visiting half of the fourth without a hit being recorded. Tyler Bortnick started the inning off after he reached second on a throwing error by Crosscutters shortstop, Jeremy Barnes that went wide of the first baseman. After an Eli Sonoqui single sent Bortnick to third, David Genao hit a sacrifice fly that plated Bortnick and brought the score to 1-0.
The Renegades one-run lead was quickly turned around as Williamsport took a one-run lead of their own in the home half of the fifth. With runners on second and third, with one out, reliever Amargos let a pitch get away from him allowing the Crosscutters to tie the game up. Williamsport took the lead during the same at-bat in the form of a sacrifice fly, which brought the score to 2-1.
The Crosscutters increased their lead to three-runs in the bottom of the seventh after a two-run home run. Williamsport's Stephen Batts hit his second home run of the season, which brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Crosscutters. The home run was the first long ball the Renegades pitching staff has given up in the last four games.
The Renegades took advantage of an error by Crosscutters second baseman, Adam Buschini, and brought the score within two runs in the top of the seventh. With runners on first and second, Brett Nommensen hit a ground ball to Buschini which should have been a routine out but instead the ball flew wide of the first baseman which advanced all runners safely. Buschini's error allowed the score to reach its final 4-2 in favor of the Crossutters.
The Renegades head to Aberdeen to take on the divisional rival IronBirds in one game at Ripken Stadium before returning back to Dutchess Stadium for the final two games of the three-game series. The IronBirds will send righty Patrick Kantakevich (1-2, 3.81) to the mound and the Renegades will counter with southpaw Kyle Lobstein (1-2, 3.80). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
