Salem Red Sox News Release
Lynchburg, VA (July 18, 2009) - Luis Segovia pounded a clutch two-run double to give Salem an early lead and provide enough offense for the Sox as Seth Garrison kept the Hillcats at bay over six innings in a 4-2 Red Sox victory on Saturday evening at City Stadium. The Sox added single runs in the third and sixth innings to win their third straight game and improve to 46-45 on the season, 14-8 in the second half.
Seth Garrison spun six superb frames, repeatedly pitching out of jams to pick up his sixth win of the year. The Hillcats had five of their ten hits over the first three innings, but stranded five on base as they failed to score over the first third of the ballgame. The lone run off Garrison was plated on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Prasch in the last of the fourth. Garrison surrendered eight hits over his six innings, striking out four and allowing one walk.
Jason Rice gave up one run and struck out a pair over his two innings on the hill, setting the stage for Jose Capellan to earn his first save of the season. In two games this series, the Red Sox bullpen has needed to throw 13 innings, but it has only yielded three runs in two Red Sox wins.
Saturday's contest lacked the drama of Friday's 15-inning marathon, but the Red Sox defense stepped up and the offense capitalized on the opportunities when they came. Lynchburg made three errors for the second straight game, and the Red Sox were flawless defensively. While the Hillcats went 1-11 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base, the Sox were 3-7 in such situations, only stranding four on the night. Six different players each had one hit for Salem, with Anthony Rizzo and Daniel Nava driving in the third and fourth runs of the night.
Lynchburg starter Bryan Morris went six and two-thirds innings, handing out six hits and four runs with a couple walks and a couple strikeouts. Morris fell to 2-5 on the season. Harrison Bishop retired all seven batters he faced out of the Hillcat bullpen to quell the Sox attack in the final innings.
Salem looks to sweep the three-game set at City Stadium on Sunday evening. Kyle Weiland is expected to start for the Red Sox against Justin WIlson for the Hillcats. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05.
