D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (July 17, 2009) - D.C. United announced today midfielder Brandon Barklage has undergone successful anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. The 22-year old rookie is out for the season and has been placed on the Season Ending Injury List, which will allow for a roster replacement. Barklage suffered the injury during United's 2-1 Open Cup win over Harrisburg on July 7.
"Brandon was enjoying a great start to his career and we expect great things from him in the future," said General Manager Dave Kasper. "His injury was an unfortunate event, but we look forward to a full recovery and seeing Brandon ready for pre-season next year."
Today's reconstruction surgery was performed by Dr. Andrew Parker of Commonwealth Orthopaedics in Reston, Virginia. Barklage's rehabilitation will take approximately six months.
A third-round MLS SuperDraft pick out of St. Louis University, Barklage has served as one of United's standout performers in U.S. Open Cup play this year. The rookie logged every minute of the competition and its qualifiers prior to his injury, scoring goals on 4/22 against FC Dallas and 5/20 against the New York Red Bulls. Playing as both an outside and playmaking midfielder, Barklage also appeared in four League matches, including his first career start on 5/6 in Kansas City.
