Exposito and Mailman Both Homer in Rout By the Beach

Myrtle Beach, SC (July 3, 2009) - After falling in a one-sided game to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the first game of their four game series, The Salem Red Sox gave the ball to Bryan Price who helped them get back to their winning ways. Price pitched six strong innings and Exposito reached base all six times he came to the plate to power the Sox to a 10-0 shutout win over the Pelicans.

Price, who was 0-3 with an 8.31 ERA coming into tonight's game, pitched six scoreless innings, striking out six and facing just one man over the minimum. Before he left the game, the Salem offense, which lay dormant yesterday, came to life. Exposito put the Sox on the board first with a solo home run to lead off the second inning. It was Exposito's fifth homer of the season, tying him with Ryan Kalish for the most this season on the club. Anthony Rizzo scored the second run of the game in the third inning after singling off Myrtle Beach starter Erik Cordier and getting driven in on a ground out by David Mailman. Mailman continued to produce and broke the game open on a two run homer just two innings later. The homer was his first of the season and scored Exposito who walked in the fifth. The home run knocked Cordier out of the game and brought in Brandon Beachy with one out in the inning. After striking out the first batter, he gave up a single to Kris Negron and another to Che-Hsuan Lin. Negron scored after the left fielder, Cody Johnson, booted the ball, giving the Sox a 5-0 lead after five innings. Exposito kept the ball rolling in the sixth inning by hitting his second double of the game, this time an RBI double scoring Rizzo who had walked with two outs in the inning. It remained a 6-0 game going into the ninth inning when the Sox scored four more runs on Myrtle Beach reliever Eric Barrett. Barrett lasted one third of an inning, giving up four runs on four hits and three walks.

On the mound, the Red Sox had solid pitching from not only Price, who got his first win in the Carolina League, but also from relievers Ryne Miller and Josh Papelbon. Price gave up only three hits in six innings while striking out six and not giving up a walk. Miller set down the first five batters he faced, giving up just one hit in his two innings of work and striking out one. Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth giving up just one hit and walking only one.

Red Sox batters received 11 walks and left 16 men on base, including leaving the bases loaded twice. The win brings the Sox back to .500 on the year with a 39-39 record. They are now a Carolina League leading 7-2 in the second half of the season. They'll look to guarantee at least a split in this series with a win tomorrow on Independence Day. The Sox will send Kyle Weiland to the mound. Weiland will oppose David Francis for the Pelicans with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
