Greenville Drive News Release
Bowling Green, KY - In the rubber game of a three-game series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods, the Drive were on the wrong end of a 1-0 shutout. Greenville (32-26) had eight hits to Bowling Green's (30-29) six, but failed to collect the big hit as they were 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth as Kyeong Kang singled home Isaias Velasquez off Stephen Fife (0-1). Velasquez led off the frame by beating out an infield single, stole second, and moved 90 feet from home on Jake Jeffries' groundout.
In taking the loss, Fife allowed his first earned run since joining the Drive on May 30th, a span of 12-1/3 innings. The right-hander fired 5.0 innings, allowing five hits while striking out three before giving way to reliever Mike Lee. Lee held the Hot Rods scoreless over the final 3.0 innings, allowing a hit and a walk with four strikeouts.
However, the trio of Joe Cruz, Mike Jarman, and Josh Satow were able to record Bowling Green's first shutout of the season. Cruz (2-2) scattered six hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 5-2/3 innings. Jarman added 2-1/3 scoreless frames and Satow tossed the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.
The Drive had their opportunities to tie the game, and even take the lead, but were held in check by the Hot Rods' pitchers. After the leadoff runner reached base in the second, third, and fourth innings Cruz was able to induce two double plays and work out of another jam.
The Hot Rods almost lost their lead in the eighth inning. With two outs and a man on third, Ryan Lavarnway hit a slow roller to third baseman Jeremy Beckham. Beckham charged the ball and threw to first, retiring Lavarnway by a half-step to preserve the lead. Greenville would get another runner to third in the ninth before Satow struck out Ryan Dent to secure the win.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on tomorrow when they host the Asheville Tourists for two games, followed by a three-game set with the Hot Rods. Southpaw Nick Hagadone will take the ball and head to the mound for Greenville as Asheville counters with right-hander Ethan Hollingsworth (3-4, 3.99 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM with the game being televised on WMYA My 40.
Thursday is also Dollar Drink Night in which fans can purchase 12-ounce Pepsi products at any of the concession stands for just a buck. Those 21-years-of-age and older can head over to the Spinx 500 Club for draft specials.
