Salem, VA (May 29, 2009) - After scoring just three total runs in three losses to Lynchburg, Salem used a four-run seventh inning to surpass Frederick 5-2 on Friday evening in front of 4,201 at Lewis-Gale. Luis Exposito's two-run homer off Nate Nery transformed a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead, and Luis Segovia added a two-run double later in the seventh to give Salem a three-run cushion. Ryne Miller shook off a wild pitch in the top of the seventh that allowed Frederick to take a 2-1 edge, calming down to earn his sixth win of the year with three solid innings in relief. And though Kyle Weiland did not factor in the decision, the righthander out of Notre Dame had perhaps his best outing of the season for Salem, throwing six strong frames to set the tone for the Sox.

Exposito was a triple short of the cycle, but finished with two singles, a double, a homer, and three RBI to carry the Red Sox offensively. In game #48 of the season, Exposito, DHing for the third time, became the first Salem batter to record four hits in a game. Che-Hsuan Lin went 2-4 for Salem with a pair of singles, and Segovia tallied the two RBI on the insurance double in the seventh.

Weiland and Nery were locked in a pitchers' duel through the first six innings. When Weiland departed at the outset of the seventh, the score was 1-1. Salem's starter finishing with four strikeouts and no walks, allowing one run on five hits. For Frederick, Nery was equally as skilled, surrendering just an unearned run in the fourth as his only blemish through six innings. But unlike Weiland, Nery returned to the mound for the seventh, a move that would prove to be a mistake for the Keys. Jason Place singled on the first pitch of the inning, and Exposito followed that up with a monster homer to left field. Nery gave up a single to Lin before finally giving way to Andy Barb out of the Keys bullpen. Barb walked Ty Weeden, the first batter he faced. After a sacrifice bunt from Matt Sheely that moved two into scoring position, Segovia's two run double off the base of the left field wall gave the Sox a 5-2 lead.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Salem, a club that had lost eight of its last ten. If Winston-Salem falls to Kinston, the Red Sox will regain first place in the Carolina League South.

The Keys and Red Sox will reunite on Saturday evening at 6:05, with the much anticipated debut of Casey Kelly expected at Lewis-Gale. A righthanded pitcher out of Sarasota, Florida, Kelly was selected in the first round (30th overall) by Boston in the 2008 draft and has shined with a 6-1 record and 1.12 ERA in Low-A Greenville. The 19-year old will be opposed by Frederick's righty Tim Bascom.
