South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - A back and forth series continued Tuesday night between the South Bend Silver Hawks and Dayton Dragons as the two teams split a doubleheader at Coveleski, thus splitting the series as well. The Silver Hawks took game one 8-0 before falling in game two 6-3.
In game one, South Bend starter Trevor Harden (WP, 3-1) pitched a gem as the Hawks shut out Dayton 8-0. Harden pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits in 7.0 innings to earn his team-leading third win of the season.
The offense in game one was provided by Jake Elmore who hit a grand slam in the fifth, breaking a scoreless tie and putting the Silver Hawks out in front for good. Ramon Ramirez added a two-RBI single in the sixth, while Alfredo Marte and Rossmel Perez each had an RBI in the inning as well to round out the scoring.
Game two was a different story, as the Dragons raced out to a 6-0 lead before holding on for the 6-3 victory. Frank Pfister and Kevin Coddington each had RBIs in a three run second against Silver Hawks starter Rafael Quezada (LP, 0-3). Cody Puckett hit a solo home run in the third, and Dave Sappelt blasted a solo shot in the fourth to help the Dragons to the big lead.
The Silver Hawks came back with three in the bottom of the fourth against Curtis Partch (WP, 1-2). Alberto Diaz and Justin Parker started the rally with one-out singles, and Diaz scored on a fielder's choice from Nelson Gomez. One out later, Isaias Asencio drove in two with a single to right, making it a 6-3 game after four innings.
The Hawks would get no closer however, as Partch, Scott Gaffney (ND), and Aguido Gonzalez (SV, 2) slammed the door shut to preserve the doubleheader and series split.
The Silver Hawks head back out on the road again tomorrow, taking on the Quad Cities River Bandits in Davenport, IA beginning at 5:00 PM. RHP Brett Moorhouse (0-1, 6.23 ERA) will be on the mound for the Silver Hawks, while Quad Cities counters with RHP Chuckie Fick (0-2, 5.25 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 4:40 PM on 1620 AM "The Point" and online at www.silverhawks.com.
