Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Friday, March 20, 2009) - Claudio Suárez, the player with the most international appearances in Mexican National Team history, will return to Chivas USA in 2009, the Major League Soccer club announced today. A three-year veteran of MLS and longtime captain of the Mexican National Team, Suárez played his last game for Chivas USA on Oct. 25, 2008, vs. the Houston Dynamo, before announcing his retirement from professional soccer on March 7, 2009.
"Claudio Suárez is a living legend of international soccer and his leadership is key to the success of our club," said Chivas USA President and CEO Shawn Hunter. "Throughout his decision-making process, we have maintained an active dialogue with Claudio. We are happy today to announce that he will be back with Chivas USA for the 2009 season."
Suárez will address media tomorrow at The Home Depot Center, during halftime of Chivas USA's 2009 Season Opener vs. the Colorado Rapids. Suárez, who will not be available to play in the game and will officially be added to Chivas USA's roster next week, is also scheduled to appear live on Fox Sports en Español's pregame show. Media interested in attending Saturday's event should email Chivas USA Communications Coordinator David Lindholm: dlindholm@cdchivasusa.com.
Perhaps the greatest central defender in the history of Mexican football, Suárez joined Chivas USA on March 24, 2006. On the international level, Suárez represented Mexico 178 times at the international level, more than any other field player for any country in world soccer. During three seasons in MLS, Suárez has played 59 regular-season games for Chivas USA (58 as a starter), registering 9 goals and 2 assists.
Chivas USA kicks off its fifth campaign in Major League Soccer when it hosts the Colorado Rapids tomorrow, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. For more information, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com.
