Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose swept their first and only home series with the Manchester Monarchs and split their weekend home series with the Quad City Flames for a 3-1-0-0 record in Week 11. Tuesday, December 16, 2008: Manitoba 4, Manchester 2
Almost 6000 hardcore fans battled the -35 degree Winnipeg weather to watch their Manitoba Moose defeat the Manchester Monarchs 4-2 on Tuesday night. In their first meeting since the 2002-03 season, Jason Krog ( 2 goals), Michael Grabner and Dirk Southern earned their first goals against the visitors from Manchester, while Karl Goehring stopped 22 shots for his ninth win. After the victory, the Moose hold a 2-2-1-0 overall record against the Monarchs, registering two wins on home ice.
Wednesday, December 17, 2008: Manitoba 3, Manchester 2
The Manitoba Moose saw their win column hit 20 in their 27th game of the season by beating the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 in front of 6099 fans on Wednesday night. This is the earliest in the season the club has ever registered 20 wins in franchise history. Captain Mike Keane, Michel Ouellet and Mark Derlago were credited with the three goals, while Karl Goehring earned his 10th win by blocking 28 attempts.
Friday, December 19, 2008: Manitoba 3, Quad City 1
In their third game in four nights, the Manitoba Moose extended their winning-streak to four games with a 3-1 victory over the Quad City Flames. Mark Cullen netted the game winner, while goaltender Karl Goehring stopped 32 of 33 attempts for his eleventh win of the season and first star honours.
Saturday, December 20, 2008: Manitoba 1, Quad City 2
After winning three consecutive games over Quad City this season, the visiting Flames beat the Moose in their last regular season match-up 2-1 at the MTS Centre on Saturday night. Alexandre Bolduc netted the lone Moose goal, while Karl Goehring blocked 24 shots in his seventh consecutive start.
Moose Notes
DEFYING THE ODDS: Despite pulling out victories Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, Manitoba was outshot by their opponents in all three matchups (24-18, 30-22, 33-26). On Tuesday, Manitoba's 18 shots was the lowest the squad has registered in a single game all season. The first time the Moose were outshot this season was against the Quad City Flames on Oct. 29/08, 35-26. However, when outshot, the Moose are 11-5-0-0 this season.
NUMBER ONE WHEN DOWN ONE: Manitoba allowed two powerplay goal on nine opportunities last weekend against the Quad City Flames, still maintaining their number one status in the AHL at 88.0 per cent. Throughout the past 20 games, the Moose have never dipped below third spot in the AHL for their penalty kill. In 2006-07, the Moose blocked 89.7 percent of opponent powerplay opportunities, good for the best PK percentage in the entire league and a new franchise record.
Upcoming Opponent
After a six-day break the Moose travel to Toronto to take on the Marlies on Saturday, December 27th and Sunday, December 28th. In their first two-matchups this season, the Moose defeated the Marlies both times on November 14 (2-1) and November 15 (4-2) at the MTS Centre.
Player of the Week Nominee
Michel Ouellet
For the second consecutive week and third time this season, Michel Ouellet earned the nomination for Moose Player of the Week this season by finishing the week with four points in five games... Ouellet earned an assist in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Manchester Monarchs and then extended his points streak to four games with his sixth goal of the season (which proved to be the game-winner) as well as an assist Wednesday in a 3-2 win over the same Monarchs... Ouellet's seventh goal of the season extended his points streak to five games in Friday's 3-1 win over Quad City before having his streak come to an end Saturday in a 2-1 loss to the Flames... Ouellet is now second in team scoring with 26 points and is tied for the team lead in assists with 16.
