Iowa Chops News Release

Down 4-1, the Iowa Chops mounted a comeback late in the 2nd period and into the 3rd period to send their game on Sunday against the Grand Rapids Griffins to overtime. However, the Griffins won in the extra frame 5-4 handing the Iowa Chops their first OT loss of the season.

Grand Rapids started fast and for the fourth straight game, the Iowa Chops had their opponent score first. The first two Griffins goals were on the power play and four minutes into the game it was 2-0 in favor of Grand Rapids. The Chops got on the scoreboard as Petteri Wirtanen (pictured) buried home a nice pass from Andy Thomas to make the score 2-1. Brian Salcido, who was +3 on the night, also assisted on the play. The Griffins would add the next two making the score 4-1, including the second goal of the night for Darren Haydar on the power play, and the night would end early for Chops goaltender JP Levasseur who was pulled after allowing 4 goals on 9 shots.

David LeNeveu came in and it seemed to put a spark in the Chops momentum. The Chops made it 4-2 with a goal from Matt Beleskey, who turned around in the high slot after a block by linemate Troy Bodie and fired one past Daniel Larsson. 10 minutes later TJ Trevelyan made it 4-3 as he sniped a shot past Larsson's glove on a 2 on 1. The Chops tied the game midway through the 3rd period as Trevelyan found Josh Green from behind the net and Green tipped one home through the legs of Larsson to complete the three-goal comeback. However, in the overtime, the Griffins found themselves on a odd-man break which led to the game-winning goal from Jason Jozsa, who found himself wide open along the left wing and fired a shot over a sprawled LeNeveu.

The Griffins coverted on 3 out of 8 power plays, while the Chops went 1 for 4.
