Worcester Sharks News Release
SAN ANTONIO- Riding the wave of a three game winning streak, the Worcester Sharks didn't anticipate any issues in Sunday afternoon's game against a San Antonio squad that had won just twice in 18 games this season. In actuality, however, the Rampage gave the Sharks all they could handle through two and a half periods of hockey.
Assuming the role of hero for the second straight night, Riley Armstrong netted the gamewinner at 9:28 of the third period as the Sharks (9-8-0-0) finished their two game Texas swing in style with a 3-1 win at the AT&T center in San Antonio. Armstrong scooped up a loose puck at the red line, charged unabated into the Rampage zone, and beat goaltender Al Montoya to the high glove side for an unassisted goal, his eighth of the year.
The win pushes the Sharks above .500 for the first time this year, and marked the first action for Thomas Greiss since a recall to San Jose - during which he did not make an appearance - over two weeks ago. Greiss sparkled, stopping 31 of 32 shots.
An early turnover forced the Sharks to play from behind, as 19-year-old Rampage winger Brett MacLean backhanded a loose puck past Greiss 6:47 into the game. The goal was MacLean's team-leading sixth of the year and gave San Antonio a 1-0 lead.
Worcester answered in kind, however, as Cory Larose capitalized on casual puck work by Rampage defensemen David Schlemko and Matt Jones as the period wound down. The veteran forced a turnover just ten feet from the Rampage net and fought off a hard check from Schlemko as he beat goaltender Al Montoya to tie the score.
Lukas Kaspar followed Armstrong's tally with a blistering forty foot slap shot two minutes later to double the Worcester advantage. The insurance was welcome, as two late penalties gave the Rampage four minutes worth of power play time down the stretch. On the night, the Sharks killed off all seven San Antonio power plays.
Worcester carries a season-best four game winning streak into Portland on Wednesday night and does not return to the DCU Center until Saturday for a 7:05pm puck drop against Bridgeport.
