Gilmour Comes Home To Coach Frontenacs

The Kingston Frontenacs are proud to announce that NHL star and hometown icon Doug Gilmour has been hired as their new Head Coach. Gilmour, who had been an Assistant Coach with the Toronto Marlies this season will join the Club immediately to assume his new role.

"I spoke with Doug (Gilmour) over the summer and I have been having discussions with him over the past two weeks about the position," said Larry Mavety, Director of Hockey Operations and General Manager. "We as an organisation believe that this is a great fit."

Gilmour was born in Kingston, Ontario, on June 25, 1963. After an outstanding career in junior with the Cornwall Royals, one in which he won the OHL's scoring title in 1982-83 with 177 points and was named the Red Tilson Trophy winner that is annually given to the League's MVP, he joined the St. Louis Blues and spent the first five years of his NHL career there. After a trade to Calgary in the off season 1988, Gilmour won the Stanley Cup in 1989. Two years later in a blockbuster trade, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs and led them to two back-to-back Conference Final appearances in 1992-93 and 1993-94. At the beginning of the 1994 season, he was named captain of the famed franchise, and wore the "C" until his trade in February 1997 to the New Jersey Devils.

His NHL accomplishments include the Frank Selke Trophy as the League's best defensive player in 1992-93, two all-star game appearances and the NHL record for scoring the two fastest shorthanded goals, :04 seconds apart. He has played in 17 international matches wearing the Maple Leaf on his chest (8 at the 1987 Canada Cup and 9 at the 1990 World Championships) and played 5 games in the 1981 World Junior Championships. His NHL totals Games Played1474 Goals 450 Assists 964 Points 1414 Penalty Minutes 1301. Play off totals Games Played 182 Goals 60 Assists 128 Points 188 Penalty Minutes 235.

Gilmour was an Assistant Coach at the 2007 Spengler Cup this past December in which Canada walked away with the gold medal.

The Frontenac's next home game is this Friday, November 21st versus the Belleville Bulls. Game time is 7:30.
