Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MA - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A affiliate of the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox, announced today that Red Sox No. 1 Draft Pick Casey Kelly is joining the Spinners in Staten Island in the midst of the team's nine-game road-trip.
Kelly, the Red Sox top selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Sarasota (Fla.) High School, 30th overall, signed with the Red Sox July 17 and reported to the Gulf Coast Red Sox.
A two-way standout at Sarasota High School, Kelly hit .473 (44-for-93) with 13 doubles, 5 homers, 31 RBI and 11 steals as a senior in 2008 while being selected as the All-Area Player of the Year. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound righthander also pitched in 12 games, going 8-1 with 2 saves and a 1.16 ERA. He fanned 77 and walked just 12 over 66.2 innings pitched.
Since reporting to the GCL Red Sox, Kelly hit .173 with five doubles, a home run and nine RBI. The 18-year-old Kelly opted to sign with the Red Sox rather than follow through his commitment to the University of Tennessee where he was due to play both football and baseball.
Kelly is one of three first round picks on the Spinners roster, joining 2007 supplemental first-round draft pick Ryan Dent and 2008 supplemental first-round draft pick Bryan Price. With the addition to Kelly of the roster, the Red Sox top five selections in the 2008 draft will all be on the Spinners roster.
Currently, the Spinners magic number stands at five games to clinch the Stedler Division title and the first playoff appearance in franchise history. Tickets still remain for the Spinners final two home games, Sept. 1 and 2, and for the potential first playoff game by calling the Spinners Box Office at 978-459-1702 or at www.lowellspinners.com.
