Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

The Renegades won a hard fought game 5-4 on Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 4,065 at Dutchess Stadium. The ‘Gades offense pounded out 10 hits and the pitching staff held the Jamestown league-leading offense in check all night.

Jamestown jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Miguel Fermin blasted a mammoth home run to left-center that just missed hitting the scoreboard. The solo shot was Fermin's league-leading 12th homerun of the season.

Renegades' catcher Mark Thomas led off the home half of the third with a single to centerfield then came around to score on a throwing error by the pitcher. Dan Jennings was trying to gun down Jeremy Beckh am on a slow roller, but his throw was wild and it allowed Thomas to score and tie the game.

The Jammers took the lead back in the fifth when Mitch MacDonald scored on a sacrifice fly by Lonnie Lechelt. Two more batters would reach in the fifth, chasing starter Diego Echeverria from the game. Echeverria only lasted 4 2/3 innings, but pitched better than what his line score would show. He held the leagues best offense to only two runs on four hits. Matt Long replaced Echeverria and struck out Jeremy Synan to end the threat.

The ‘Gades then rallied and took the lead in the home half of the fifth. Thomas struck again and led off with a double and then scored on Robi Estrada's triple to right field. Estrada then scored on Beckham's fielder's choice, putting the ‘Gades ahead by one.

Hudson Valley tacked on some much needed insurance in the sixth and seventh innings, the first coming after Justin Reynolds drove in Jeff Caroll on a double. Mike Ross then created a run on his own in the seventh, stealing home after getting caught in a rundown.

Matt Long stayed on to pitch the sixth and seventh, but was yanked in the eighth after giving up two runs, bringing Jamestown to within one. Manager Joe Alvarez elected to go with All-Star closer Matt Gorgen to try and end the threat. Gorgen came out firing and retired the next two batters to end the inning. He then finished off Jamestown in the ninth to earn his 10th save of the season.

0D Thomas had two hits and a run scored on the night and is now batting .385 in the month of August.

With the loss, Jamestown has now dropped three straight. It is only the third time all season they have lost three in a row.

The Renegades look to sweep the three game series against Jamestown on Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium. Shane Dyer (2-3, 4.42) is scheduled to start for the Renegades. The Jammers counter with Guery Ramirez (3-4, 5.02). First pitch is slated for 7:05.

In other news, All-Star rosters were released on Tuesday, with six Renegades getting All-Star nods. Thanks to your votes, Matt Gorgen, Jason Tweedy, Kyeong Kang, Anthony Scelfo, Nick Barnese and Jason Corder were all selected to play in the game on Tuesday night. The game will be hosted by Tri-City at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, NY. Stay tuned to hvrenegades.com for more info on the 2008 All-Star Game!
