Rock Cats win over Binghamton

New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats survived a ninth inning scare to down Binghamton 8-5 on Saturday night.

The B-Mets struck for four runs in the ninth inning, including an RBI double by Josh Petersen. Rock Cats' reliever Zach Ward escaped the jam to pick up his first save of the season.

The Rock Cats jumped out of the gates four runs in the first inning. Dustin Martin kicked off the scoring spree with a one-out double to center field. David Winfree then hit a two-out single that scored Martin for a 1-0 lead. Erik Lis followed with a single and Danny Valencia cleared the bases with a two-run triple to right field to extend the lead, 3-0. Matt Moses added an RBI double that scored Valencia.

Mike Carp' solo home run in the third inning put Binghamton on the board, 4-1.

The Rock Cats added a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth and both proved to be important. Valencia led off the inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Butera. Martin added an RBI single.

Martin led the Rock Cats with three hits and scored two runs. Valencia and Felix Molina has two hits apiece.

Jay Rainville (8-8, 6.19) struck out six while limiting the B-Mets to one run on four hits through six innings.

Binghamton starter Jose Sanchez settled down after the first inning, but the damage was already done. Sanchez (10-6, 4.24) finished with five runs (4 ER) and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
