Blue Crabs Pound Patriots 8-2

WALDORF, MD- The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-2 in front of 2,356 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Southern Maryland struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead when rightfielder John Ramistella reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop, advanced to third on a one out double into the right field corner by first baseman Clinton Johnston and scored on a RBI groundout to first by designated hitter Eric Crozier.

The Blue Crabs added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 3-0 when third baseman Patrick Osborn hit a two out triple into the right field corner and came around to score on a two run home run to left center by Crozier (9).

Somerset plated a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Blue Crabs lead to 3-1 when centerfielder Elliott Ayala hit a one out infield single to short, advanced to second on a Blue Crabs' throwing error and scored on a two out RBI single to left by third baseman Brandon Larson.

Southern Maryland answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 4-1 when leftfielder James Shanks led off with a double to left center and came around to score on a two out RBI single to right by shortstop George Sandel.

The Blue Crabs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 7-1. Southern Maryland loaded the bases on a lead off single to left by Johnston, a walk by Osborn and a one out single to center by centerfielder Jeremy Owens. Second baseman Christopher Maples then cleared the bases with a two out three run triple into the right field corner.

The Patriots scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Blue Crabs lead to 7-2 when second baseman David Housel led off with a single to left, moved to third on a single down the left field line by shortstop Teuris Olivares and scored on a RBI single to center by Larson.

Southern Maryland scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 8-2 when Johnston hit a two out solo home run (8) to left.

Blue Crabs' starter Jonathan Connolly (2-1) picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out nine and walking none in 6.1 innings of work. Patriots' starter Steve Kelly (5-5) suffered the loss, allowing fours runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out two in 5.2 innings pitched.

With the loss the Patriots dropped to 0-2 in the second half and 40-32 overall on 2008 season while the Blue Crabs improved to 2-0 and 38-34.

The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Wednesday, July 16th when the 2008 Atlantic League All-Star Game takes place at Commerce Bank Ballpark.
