Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - In frigid temperatures reminiscent of their season-opening series, the Pelicans skated past the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 6-1, in the lid-lifter of a three-game set from Frawley Stadium.
The Pelicans got on the board first in the second inning. Willie Cabrera singled to start the attack with one away and advanced to second as Blue Rocks starter Greg Holland walked Jon Mark Owings. Concepcion Rodriguez followed with a bases clearing triple to the alley in left-center field, and the Pelicans led, 2-0.
Myrtle Beach doubled the lead in the top of the third. Holland walked Brandon Hicks to lead off the inning and Tyler Flowers followed with a looping home run over the wall in right field to make it 4-0 for the birds. Holland (2-2) departed the ballgame one batter after the Flowers' home run in favor of Everett Teaford, who finished the inning.
The Blue Rocks got a run back in the bottom of the frame, as Jarrod Dyson led off with a double and scored on a throwing error on Flowers as he attempted to steal third base.
Pelicans' starter Ryne Reynoso departed the game due to pitch count following the fourth, and did not factor in the decision. The win went to Ferdin Tejeda in relief. Tejeda (1-0) turned in three scoreless innings, permitting just two hits.
The fighting feathers were back at in the fifth, plating two more runs to take a 6-1 lead. Ernesto Mejia got the rally started with a one-out double that extended his personal hit streak to 11 games. Brandon Powell followed with a bunt-single and both runners scored on Cabrera's third hit of the night, a double to the alley in right-center field. Powell added a third hit in the ninth inning of the ballgame.
Travis Jones had his team-best 11-game hit streak come to an end despite reaching base three times. The second baseman walked and also reached on two errors committed by shortstop Chris McConnell.
The teams will play game two of the series Saturday night at Frawley Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6:05 PM as RHP Gonzalo Lopez (1-2, 5.86) makes the start for Myrtle Beach against RHP Matt Kniginyzky (0-3, 4.74) for Wilmington.
