
Extra-Base Hits Guide Salem to 10-4 Win Over the Warthogs

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Salem Avalanche scored early and often in a 10-4 win over Winston-Salem on Friday night at Ernie Shore Field. Both teams tallied 12 hits, but Salem smacked seven doubles and a home run to snap their five-game losing streak and cruise to victory in the opener of this three-game series. The Warthogs managed a solo home run and 11 singles in dropping 3 of 4 against the Avalanche this season.
The Avalanche struck for three runs in the first inning off Warthogs starting pitcher Michael Dubee. Tim Torres reached on an error and Jordan Parazz was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Mark Ori followed with a two-run double to give Salem the lead. Later in the inning, Orlando Rosales brought a run home with a two-out single to put the Avalanche in front 3-0. Koby Clemens reached on an RBI infield single in the third inning to extend Salem's lead to 4-0.
Clemens plated a pair with a double in the fifth inning as Salem scored three runs in the frame to go in front 7-0. The Warthogs finally tallied a run in the sixth inning when Salvador Sanchez brought John Shelby III across the plate with an RBI single. Salem answered in the seventh when Clemens, who went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, smacked a solo home run off Warthogs reliever Ricky Brooks to give the Avalanche an 8-1 lead.
Winston-Salem collected a pair of runs in the seventh inning when C.J. Retherford led off with a solo home run. An RBI single by Shelby III, who finished 4-for-5, cut the Warthogs deficit to 8-3. Salem added a run in the eighth inning and another in the ninth, before Winston-Salem finalized the scoring with a run in the bottom of the ninth on a bases-loaded wild pitch.
Salem starting pitcher Corey Bass (1-2) tied a season-high with six innings worked and surrendered three runs on eight hits to collect his first win of the season. Dubee (3-2) allowed seven runs on eight hits in five innings of work to take the lass for the Warthogs.
The Warthogs and Avalanche will square off in game two of this three-game series on Saturday at 6 PM at Ernie Shore Field. Winston-Salem will start RHP John Ely (0-4, 3.86) and the Avalanche will counter with LHP David Qualben (1-4, 6.52).
