Potomac Nationals News Release
KINSTON, N.C. - Ross Detwiler had not won since his very first outing on April 6th. The left-hander changed that quickly Friday night earning his second win of the season and fueling Potomac's 5-1 victory over Kinston at Grainger Stadium.
Detwiler (2-2) kept the K-tribe hitters off balance throughout the night using his repertoire of pitches. The 22-year-old had perhaps his best outing of the season going six solid innings allowing just one run and four hits while striking out six and not walking a batter.
Meanwhile, the Nationals offense provided the run support needed for Detwiler. In the third inning, after Francisco Plasencia singled, Seth Bynum thought he had struck out swinging on three pitches, but umpire Anthony Johnson called a balk on Kinston pitcher Hector Rondon. Bynum relished the second chance as he hammered a home run over the left field wall for a 2-0 lead. The homer was his third of the season.
Marvin Lowrance would continue the home run trend. Lowrance clubbed his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot with one out in the top of the fourth inning off of Rondon (0-3) giving the P-Nats a 3-0 lead.
Detwiler did not allow a runner to reach second base until the fifth inning. The lone Kinston run came on a two-out RBI single from Johnny Drennen in Detwiler's final inning, the sixth.
The P-Nats answered Kinston's run in the top of the seventh as the bottom of the order again contributed. With two outs, Seth Bynum laced an RBI double to right field, and Jhonatan Solano followed with an RBI single to left. The Nationals led 5-1 and cruised the rest of the way.
Yunior Novoa relieved Detwiler to begin the seventh and retired nine of the 10 he faced with his useful fastball-changeup combination. The left-hander pitched three scoreless innings to seal the win for Detwiler and stop the P-Nats two game losing streak.
The series will continue tomorrow night with game three of the four-game series. Craig Stammen (0-0, 1.71) will take the mound for the Nationals for his second start of the season opposite Carlton Smith (0-1, 6.10). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
