Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA - The Winston-Salem Warthogs left their bats at home as they were shutout 1-0 by Potomac on Wednesday night at Pfitzner Stadium. It was the second time in as many nights Potomac defeated the Warthogs by a 1-0 score and third time the Nationals have blanked Winston-Salem this season.
The Warthogs were swept for the second consecutive series and finished their six-game road trip without a win. In the three-game series against the Nationals, the Warthogs were limited to just two runs as they fell to 1-8 on the road for the season.
Potomac took advantage of a pair of breaks to score the game's lone run in the second inning off Warthogs starting pitcher John Ely. Frank Diaz reached on a one-out single. After Leonard Davis struck out, Dee Brown lined a shot off the glove of Warthogs third baseman C.J. Retherford to put runners on second and third with two outs. Edgardo Baez followed with a single to load the bases. Next, Seth Bynum laced a shot off Javier Colina's glove at second base to score Diaz. On the play, Warthogs right fielder Salvador Sanchez gunned down Dee Brown at the plate to end the inning and hold the Nationals lead to 1-0.
Potomac starting pitcher Jordan Zimmerman (3-1) made the lead stand, as he was dominant in blanking Winston-Salem thru seven innings. The former 2nd round pick in 2007 by the Washington Nationals limited the Warthogs to three singles without allowing a walk and striking out a season-high nine batters. Carlos Martinez worked a scoreless eighth inning and Zech Zinicola recorded the final three outs to collect his third save of the season.
Ely (0-2) was stellar once again for the Warthogs as he tossed six innings and limited Potomac to one run on six hits with season-high eight strikeouts. Winston-Salem has only managed to score 10 runs in his five starts this season. Ryan Rote tossed two scoreless innings of relief for Winston-Salem, who extended their losing streak to a season-high six games.
The Warthogs will travel back to Winston-Salem where they will open a four-game home stand over the weekend by welcoming the Wilmington Blue Rocks to Ernie Shore Field. The opener is scheduled for Thursday with a 7 PM first pitch. Game two on Friday is at 7 PM with Saturday's first pitch scheduled for 6 PM. The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday with a 2 PM start time.
