Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, got a career-long-tying performance from David Qualben on the mound in a 5-0 win over the Kinston Indians Wednesday night on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Koby Clemens went 2-for-2 the win for Salem (12-13) in game three of the series with Kinston (8-15).
Prior to the game, Qualben had reached the sixth inning just one in four starts with Salem. Wednesday, the lefty from Brooklyn hurled seven shutout frames and picked off three of the four baserunners against him. Qualben has totaled six pickoffs in his first five '08 starts. The performance against Kinston was the sixth seven-inning outing in his pro career.
Offensively, the Avs loaded the bases in the fourth against Kinston starter Jeanmar Gomez. With one out, Koby Clemens volleyed a two-run single and gave the Avs the lead.
Salem extended the advantage in the seventh against Kinston reliever Heath Taylor. With two on via walk, Cesar Quintero singled to right to score Clemens. On the play, outfielder Jason Denham made two errors-one fielding and one throwing-to leave Salem with two on in scoring position. Salem's final tally came across in the eighth as Jordan Parraz scored ona Jimmy Van Ostrand single. Parraz has reached base in all 22 games he's played in to begin the season.
The Avs welcome first-place Myrtle Beach in Thursday night as Salem's Polin Trinidad faces Myrtle righty Deunte Heath.
