Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va.- In his last outing, Jordan Zimmermann suffered his first defeat as a Potomac National, but in his first start since, the 21-year-old showed no ill effects from the loss. The right-hander dominated the Warthogs helping lead the Nationals to a 1-0 victory on Wednesday night at Pfitzner Stadium.
Zimmermann (3-1), appeared un-hittable throughout his seven innings by not allowing a run and striking out a season-high nine Warthogs hitters. The Wisconsin native allowed just one base runner to advance to second base, which came in the second inning after a single and a sacrifice. Winston-Salem had no answer offensively as Zimmermann had a strikeout in five of his seven innings including striking out the side in the top of the seventh.
Potomac's offense did not fare much better against Warthogs' starter John Ely (0-3), who remains winless in 2008. However, the P-Nats' bats provided just enough to give Zimmermann the win. In the bottom of the second inning, the Nationals strung together three consecutive singles capped by Seth Bynum's 12th RBI of the season, which proved to be the eventual game winner.
After the P-Nats took the early lead, their offense disappeared. Similar to Winston-Salem, Potomac advanced just one runner to second base, which came from Elijah Dukes' double in the sixth inning.
Leading 1-0 heading into the eighth, the Nationals bullpen continued to look impressive. Carlos Martinez made his eighth appearance of the season throwing a scoreless frame, and Zech Zinicola earned his second consecutive save in as many opportunities and his third of the season by mowing down the Hogs in the ninth. Zinicola extended his scoreless innings streak to 12 1/3.
After Carlos Martinez and Zech Zinicola each pitched scoreless innings, the Nationals bullpen has not surrendered a run in 13 consecutive frames.
Dating back to 2007, Zimmermann has allowed just one earned run in 52 2/3 innings while pitching at his home parks. The impressive mark spans over 11 appearances at both Pfitzner Stadium and Centennial Field in Vermont.
The Nationals continue their seven-game home stand tomorrow against the Frederick Keys, who took two of three games from the P-Nats in their series last weekend in Maryland. Adrian Alaniz (2-0, 2.70) is scheduled to start for Potomac opposite Kyle Schmidt (1-0, 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
