Chicago Sky News Release
CHICAGO, April 9, 2008 - The Chicago Sky announced today that Michael Mitchell has joined the team as assistant coach. Mitchell has been scouting for the Sky on the west coast for the past month, and has14 years of experience as a professional basketball player and three years as a coach. He joined Sky Head Coach and GM Steven Key and Assistant Coach Stephanie White in the Sky's WNBA Draft war room today, as the team selected WBCA Defensive Player of the Year Sylvia Fowles with the second pick.
"I'm thrilled to have Michael on the team," said Key. "He has 14 years of professional play in the post, and will be able to teach Fowles the nuances of the position. She has rare mobility and size for the WNBA, and Mike can help her develop into the league's premier post player. He is a great fit for the Sky: knowledgeable and passionate about basketball and a great dad, with a zest for life and new experiences."
Mitchell was the second overall pick in the 1990 CBA Draft before taking his game overseas, where he played for the Gold Coast Rollers, Australian NBL (1991-1994); Brisbane Bullets, Australian NBL (1994-1996); North Melbourne Giants, Australian NBL (1996-1997); Rhondorf Dragons in Germany (1997-1999); and was a member of the Irish National Team (2000-2003). Mitchell played with Key in Australia and Germany.
Mitchell was an assistant basketball coach at the University of California, Riverside for two years, and most recently was the head coach for the Ramona High School boy's basketball team.
Mitchell played collegiate ball at Fresno State University (1985-88), where he was named 1986 PCAA Freshman of the Year and 1987 PCAA Second Team All Conference. Mitchell later attended Colorado State University (1988-1990) where he was named 1990 WAC MVP, 1990 WAC Newcomer of the Year, 1990 First Team All Conference and 1990 NABC All-Star Team.
Mitchell holds a B.S. in kinesiology from Cal Baptist University in Riverside. He has a son, Donovan (11), and a daughter, Myca (9).
The Sky is one of seven independently-owned teams in the WNBA, the world's longest- running women's professional sports league. The Sky celebrated its inaugural season in 2006, and finished a successful sophomore season with a 14-20 record and guard Armintie Price named WNBA Rookie of the Year. The team selected WBCA Defensive Player of the Year Sylvia Fowles in the 2008 WNBA Draft. For more information or to purchase 2008 season tickets, call 866.SKY.WNBA or visit www.chicagosky.net.
