Indiana Fever News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Fever has selected 6-1 forward Khadijah Whittington from North Carolina State University with the 26th pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft. It was the Fever's lone pick in the draft, having traded its first round selection to the Connecticut Sun as part of its trade to acquire All-Star Katie Douglas.
Whittington averaged double-figure scoring and rebounding as both a junior and a senior at NC State. She averaged 16.8 points and 11.7 rebounds per game as a senior, with 10.5 points and 10.5 rebounds as a junior. Fourth in the country in rebounding last season, she shot 50 percent from the floor while leading the Wolfpack in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks.
The Roanoke, Va., native was an honorable mention All-America selection, and was chosen first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference. She was an ACC All-Defensive Team selection while leading NC State to the semifinal round of the Women's NIT.
Said Fever Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Kelly Krauskopf, "She's a defender, and a proven scorer and rebounder. She fits well with our style of play and she reminds us of a young Tamika Catchings. Khadijah has a relentless style of play."
Added first-year Fever Head Coach Lin Dunn, "Night in and night out, she was a double-double in the ACC. She plays hard 24/7!"
One of three players in ACC history with 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 steals and 100 blocks, Whittington played all 129 games at NC State over the past four years, never missing a game. She compiled a program-record 23 double-doubles during her senior campaign, leaving her second all-time at NC State with 43 career double-doubles.
WNBA training camps open April 20 and the Fever hosts a preseason game on May 7 against the Minnesota Lynx (7:00 p.m.). Its regular season opener is May 17 at Conseco Fieldhouse against the Washington Mystics (7:00 p.m.). Led by WNBA All-Stars Tamika Catchings, Katie Douglas and Tammy Sutton-Brown, the Fever bids for its first WNBA Finals appearance after reaching the Eastern Conference Finals in two of the past three seasons. Season tickets are available at FeverBasketball.com or by calling (317) 917-2500.
