Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans and Potomac Nationals (Washington Nationals) play game two of a three-game series at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, VA. The Nationals took the opener, 2-0, and will be looking to claim the series in game two. The two teams will conclude the series on Thursday night at 7:05 PM. Following the game, the Pelicans will return to Myrtle Beach for their home opening weekend. They will play the Frederick Keys (Baltimore Orioles) in a three-game series (4/11-4/13) and conclude a six-game opening homestand with a three-game series against the Winston-Salem Warthogs (Chicago White Sox) (4/14-4/16).
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Tommy Hanson (0-0, 0.00) will make his second start of the season for the Pelicans against RHP Adrian Alaniz (0-0, 0.00), who will make his first start and appearance of the season for Potomac.
Hanson: Had an electrifying start to the season, firing five hitless innings against the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the Pelicans season opener on Friday (4/4). Hanson was literally untouchable in his first outing of the season, fanning a career-high 13 Blue Rocks over those five innings. The 13 K's were just one shy of the Pelicans' franchise record held by Kyle Davies (14, 6/12/04 @ Kinston). The 21-year old did not factor in the decision as the Pelicans prevailed in 13 innings, 2-0. Hanson made 11 starts for Myrtle Beach in 2007, posting a record of 3-3 with an ERA of 4.30.
Alaniz: 23-year old right-hander Alaniz dominated the New York-Penn League in his first professional season in 2007. Alaniz posted an 8-2 record for the Vermont Lake Monsters, while being selected as an NYPL All-Star. He boasted an ERA of 2.39 while striking out more than a batter an inning (62 K:60.1 IP). The Texan will be making his Carolina League debut tonight for the P-Nats.
BULLISH PEN: The Pelicans bullpen was sensational during the first week of the season. As RHP Jeff Lyman and RHP Nick Fellman combined to throw five scoreless innings in the series opener with Potomac, the Birds' pen has allowed just two earned runs in 28.2 IP thus far this season. That total equates to a remarkably thin 0.67 ERA and is a large reason why the Pelicans boast the second lowest team ERA in the Carolina League (2.30 ERA). They trail only the P-Nats, whose shutout on Tuesday propelled them to the top of the heap with a mark of 2.12.
STREAKS AND SUCH: Pelicans' catcher Tyler Flowers has displayed a patient approach at the plate while reaching base safely in all five Pelicans' contests this season. Flowers has walked a league-high nine times through five games, and despite a batting average of .214, he is currently fifth in the league in on-base percentage (.522)
RECENT TRANSACTIONS: LHP Lee Hyde, RHP Jose Santiago, LHP Jon Venters; LHP Tyler Wilson and OF Quentin Davis will open the season on the Disabled List, and were placed there Friday, April 4th.
