Dayton, Ohio-Denis Phipps lined a base hit to center field to drive in Brandon Waring from second base in the bottom of the eighth inning and Enerio Del Rosario pitched a perfect ninth as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Fort Wayne Wizards 3-2 in the Dragons home opener at Fifth Third Field on Monday night.

The win improved the Dragons to 2-3 on the young season while Fort Wayne fell to 1-4.

Dayton's Brandon Waring drilled a home run to right field after a double by Todd Frazier in the first inning to give the Dragons an early 2-0 lead.

Fort Wayne scored an unearned run in the second to make it 2-1. Then in the sixth, the Wizards tied the game on a single by Brad Chalk, a balk, and a run-scoring hit by Drew Cumberland to make it 2-2.

In the Dayton eighth inning, Waring singled to right with one out and Mike McKennon followed with a smash off the glove of the first baseman that moved Waring to third. Phipps then lined a single up the middle to bring in Waring and give Dayton a 3-2 lead.

Del Rosario (1-0) recorded the final four outs for the win. Fort Wayne's Jeremy Hefner (1-1) worked three and one-third innings and was charged with one run, the tie-breaker in the eighth, for the loss.

Notes: Fort Wayne pitchers struck out 16 Dragons hitters in the game...Dayton pitcher Jeff Jeffords posted six strikeouts in two and two-thirds innings of relief and has struck out 11 in four and two-thirds on the season.
