Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Portland, Maine- Slugger the Sea Dog successfully completed a 5k marathon in 25 minutes and 30 seconds at the Bay Club on Monday, under his goal of 26 minutes and 20 seconds. Slugger's efforts raised more than $1,500.00 for the "Two Trials" fund raising campaign and the Maine Children's Cancer Program.

Slugger and the Portland Sea Dogs teamed up with the Bay Club, the official Health Club of the Portland Sea Dogs to assist 2008 Olympic hopeful Emily LeVan in her quest to raise $52,400.00 (twice the 26.2-mile marathon distance) for the Maine Children's Cancer Program, the official charity of the Sea Dogs.

As Emily prepared for the 2008 Olympic Marathon Trials, her four year old daughter, Maddie was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and is undergoing treatment through the Maine Children's Cancer Program at the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital. As a result Emily has started the "Two Trials" fundraising campaign; a mother training for the Olympic marathon trials and a daughter fighting childhood leukemia.

Slugger the Sea Dog heard about Emily's story and decided he wanted to help. Slugger, who needed to get in shape for the Sea Dogs 15th season which opens on April 11th, pledged to run 5 kilometers in under 26.2 minutes.

The Maine Children's Cancer Program setup a special website for anyone who wished to sponsor Slugger's run, pledges went directly towards Emily's "Two Trials" fundraising campaign and goal of $52,400.00.

Although Slugger's run is complete, donations are still being accepted. With Slugger's efforts the "Two Trials" fund raising effort is now up to $33,000.00. To make a donation, log onto www.seadogs.com and click on the "Two Trials" banner. The Portland Sea Dogs open their 15th season, presented by Northeast Delta Dental, on April 3rd at New Britain. The home opener is slated for Friday, April 11th at 6:00 PM against the New Britain Rock Cats.
