Manitoba Moose News Release

WINNIPEG, MB. -- Physical play, penalties, and give-and-take goals characterized the third and final game in four nights between the Manitoba Moose and Rochester Americans Friday night. It took five minutes of overtime and a shootout for the winner to be decided, but the Moose managed to make it three in a row vs. the Americans, winning 6-5 in a shootout.

A shutout in Game 1 and a blowout in Game 2 meant the Amerks were seeking revenge on home turf, stoking a heated divisional rivalry for their hometown crowd. Heavy checks in the Americans' corner and again behind the Manitoba net resulted in an interference penalty to Manitoba's Mike Brown, followed shortly by a hooking penalty to Jason Jaffray, giving Rochester their first two-man advantage for 18 seconds. Despite stifling two full minutes of the home team's initial powerplay, rookie Moose goaltender Cory Schneider struggled to see through a jumble of players and allowed the first goal of the game -- a powerplay marker by Clarke MacArthur with a 1:25 remaining in the first.

With Jaffray out of the box and the Moose eager to even things up, play quickly returned to the Amerks zone. In the dying seconds of the first period, Michael Grabner positioned himself at the top of Adam Dennis' crease and capitalized on slick pass from Colby Genoway to tie the game for Manitoba. It was to be the first of many give-and-take goals in the game.

With both teams down a player in the second, Jaffray backhanded the puck over Dennis' left shoulder to put the Moose up 2-1. 19 seconds later, the Americans countered with a four-on-four goal of their own, delivered by Martin Lojek at the two-minute mark. Late in the period, Rochester benefited from their eighth powerplay and second two-man advantage, and MacArthur was quick to regain the Amerks lead with his second powerplay goal of the game at 14:46.

Five minutes into the third, rookie Moose forward Juraj Simek powered his way to the Rochester zone and slipped a pass to Genoway who netted the game-tying goal for Manitoba. But within two minutes, Rochester regained their lead and then extended it to two goals on markers by Lojek and Drew Larman. Matching the Americans' two-goal performance, Manitoba's top line soon tied the game, thanks to goals by Brad Moran and Jozef Balej near the ten-minute mark.

Athletic, key saves at both ends of the ice highlighted five minutes of four-on-four overtime, but it would take solid goaltending by Cory Schneider and shootout goals by Balej and Genoway to earn Manitoba two points in the North Division standings.
