Ford, Canaries Shut Out Explorers

Sioux Falls, SD - Ryan Ford led the Sioux Falls Canaries (22-23) to a 3-0 victory by pitching a three-hit shutout against the Sioux City Explorers (24-21) on Wednesday night at the Birdcage.

The Canaries took two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cameron Coughlan led off with a single, and then stole second. With two outs, Matt Imwalle hit a double down the right field line driving in Coughlan for the 1-0 lead. Ben Van Iderstine followed with a double down the left field line to bring Imwalle around home. At the end of the first inning, the Canaries held a 2-0 advantage.

The Birds got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Orlando Miller singled up the middle and advanced to second on a walk by Matt Imwalle. Miller proceeded to steal third base, putting runners on the corners. Ben Van Iderstine grounded into a fielder's choice, but Miller was able to cross home and give the Canaries the 3-0 final.

Ford (7-5) picked up the win in his final start of the 2007 season. Brian Buchanan (5-12) suffered the loss for the Explorers.

The Canaries take on the Saints in the final series of the season. Thursday night's 7:05 game is the Canaries "Hunting Cap Giveaway & Player Jersey Auction" presented by South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks. The first 500 fans of all ages will receive a Canaries hunting cap and following the game the theme night jerseys will be auctioned off to raise money for the "Sportsmen Against Hunger."
