Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs dropped their fifth straight game and fourth in a row to the visiting Burlington Bees 8-6 on Friday night at O'Brien Field. The loss drops the Chiefs to 30-36 with the final three games of the half starting on Friday against Clinton.

Burlington jumped out to a first inning lead on Chiefs starter Robert Hernandez after Derrick Robinson reached on an infield single and Jeff Bianchi followed with a single. The Bees pulled off a double steal to give them runners on second and third with one out. Hernandez got Jeff Bianchi to pop out to second but Brady Everett blooped a two out single into center to give the Bees a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs answered back in the second inning after Jim Adduci drew a one out walk and Yusuf Carter connected on his eighth home run of the season off Bees starter Harold Mozingo to tie the game at 2-2. The Bees regained the lead in the third inning after Mertins singled and picked up his second stolen base. He eventually came around to score on a ground out by Everett to make it 3-2.

Peoria wasted no time regaining the lead in the bottom half of the inning after Dylan Johnston led off with a double off the wall in right field and Jonathon Mota singled to center and advanced to second on a throw to give the Chiefs runners on second and third with one out. Josh Lansford followed with a two-run single to center to give the Chiefs the lead back at 4-3.

Hernandez could not hold the lead in the fourth. After hitting Michael Thompson with a pitch, Matt Morizio doubled to give the Bees runners on second and third. After two men were out Robinson hit a triple to the gap in right center field to clear the bases and give Burlington a 5-4 lead. Mertins got his second hit of the night on a single up the middle to push the lead to 6-4.

The offenses continued to control the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after Carter hit his second two run home run of the game to tie the game 6-6. The homer was his team high ninth of the season and the first multi home run game by a Chief this season.

Peoria could not keep the game tied for long because in the fifth inning Michael Thompson walked to lead the inning off against Chiefs reliever Donnie Walters and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Morizio to put Burlington in front 7-6.

The Bees picked up an insurance run after Everett and Dickerson singled and Thompson reached on an error by the shortstop Dylan Johnston that kept the inning alive. Jeremy Papelbon walked Morizio with the bases loaded to give the Bees an 8-6 lead.

Robert Hernandez allowed six runs on six hits while striking out three but did not factor in the decision. Donnie Walters came out of the bullpen and allowed the go ahead run to pick up his first loss of the season. Jeremy Papelbon allowed an unearned run in three innings of work while striking out two. Mozingo picked up the win allowing six runs over six innings of work and Chris Hayes worked the final 1 2/3 to earn his fourth save.
