West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

FORT WAYNE, IN - Stevie Delabar carried a perfect game through the first two outs in the fifth inning and went on to allow one hit in seven total innings pitched for Fort Wayne in a 2-1 triumph over the Whitecaps. West Michigan has lost six in a row for the first time July 15-20, 2004.

Delabar retired 17 batters in a row before Audy Ciriaco reach base for the Whitecaps on an infield hit deep in the hole to shortstop. The right hander threw seven innings total and allowed two walks and one hit batsman in addition to the single by Ciriaco.

Offensively, the Wizards moved ahead with an RBI single by Javis Diaz in the third. Sam Carter scored to make the lead 2-0 on a rare throwing error by Whitecaps second baseman Scott Sizemore in the fourth.

The only West Michigan run of the game scored in the ninth when James Skelton led off with a bunt single against reliever Rolando Valdez. Skelton scored two batters later on an RBI by double by Santo De Leon.

Chris Cody, who remains second in the Midwest League with a 1.68 ERA, suffered another tough loss to fall to 5-5. Cody allowed two runs (1 ER) on seven hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in 7.2 innings on the mound for West Michigan.

The Whitecaps magic number to clinch a playoff berth in the first half remains at three because Lansing defeated Great Lakes, 8-2 to pull within 1.5 games of the Whitecaps in the Eastern Division First Half Wild Card race.
