Lynx waive Shona Thorburn and Katryna Gaither

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx released guard Shona Thorburn and center Katryna Gaither today. Thorburn, the seventh overall pick, was Minnesota's second selection of the first round of the 2006 WNBA Draft after top pick Seimone Augustus. Gaither was signed by the Lynx as a free agent in March.

Thorburn appeared in 22 games as a rookie out of Utah in 2006. She averaged 0.7 points and 0.8 rebounds while playing in 6.4 minutes per game. The 5-9 guard's season highs were three points, four rebounds and seven assists. Thorburn scored four points and dished out one assist in five minutes in a 62-56 loss to the San Antonio Silver Stars on May 5 in Wichita. In a 63-55 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on May 13, Thorburn was the starting point guard and played 13 minutes in which she had no points, four assists and two steals.

Gaither, a 6-3 center out of Notre Dame, appeared in both preseason games with the Lynx. She had four points, two rebounds and a block in 18 minutes against the Silver Stars. Against the Sparks, Gaither had five points and three rebounds in nine minutes of play.

The Lynx will open the 2007 season at the Indiana Fever on May 19 and will play their home opener on Sunday, May 20, at 6 p.m. against the Sacramento Monarchs at the Target Center.
