Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Roman Voloshenko and Shawn Belle each scored in the shoot-out for Houston, as Admirals couldn't hold a 2-1 lead and fell to the Aeros 3-2 Thursday afternoon in a kid's day game at the Toyota Center in Houston.
After a scoreless first period the Aeros got first blood when Voloshenko picked up his ninth goal of the season at the 6:10 mark of the second. However, Chris Durno, playing in his first game this season for the Admirals since being acquired in a trade last week, tied the score at one just 32 seconds into the third during a five-on-three advantage for Milwaukee.
The Admirals would make it 2-1 with just over seven minutes to play in the game when Cal O'Reilly notched his tenth marker of the year on an assist from Alex Henry. But former Admiral Curtis Murphy would tie the game just 34 seconds later when he slipped a wrister past Milwaukee netminder Pekka Rinne.
Neither team could find the back of the net during the rest of regulation or during the five minute overtime. Rich Peverley started the shootout for the Admirals and was stopped by Houston goalie Miroslav Kopriva before Voloshenko beat Rinne. After the Ads' Mikko Lehtonen and Houston's Mattias Weinhandl both failed on their attempts, Belle scored on his try, putting the Admirals down two with two shooters to go. Then Milwaukee forward Ramzi Abid missed his attempt, giving the Aeros the win.
The game featured 98 penalty minutes on 35 infractions by both teams. However, the power play opportunities didn't seem to help either team, as they combined to go one-for-20 on the day, including a one-for-13 performance by the Admirals.
The loss was the sixth in eight shoot-outs for the Admirals and it was also their league leading 18th foray into overtime.
The Admirals and Aeros finish their home-and-home set tomorrow night at 7:00 pm at the Bradley Center. The first 5,000 fans will receive a Jordin Tootoo Bobblehead Doll, sponsored by the Aurora Sports Medicine Institute, and the Wisconsin Badger Band will perform, courtesy of Reinhart & Mahoney.
