Dayton splits double header with South Bend

August 30, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

South Bend, IN - For the second consecutive night, the Dayton Dragons (31-34, 66-69) and the South Bend Silver Hawks (40-25, 73-58) played a double header at Coveleski Stadium and for the second consecutive night, offense was tough to come by. The Dragons pulled out a 1-0 win with a run in the top half of the seventh inning in game number one. South Bend would need extra innings to win game two, prevailing 3-2 in eight innings. With the game two loss, Dayton is eliminated from the Midwest League playoffs for 2006.

In the opening game of the twin bill pitching once again ruled the evening as both teams sputtered offensively. Ryan Schreppel (ND) scattered four hits in his 6.0 innings of work not allowing the Dragons a run. The Miami Valley's team did have a runner thrown out at home plate to end the top half of the sixth inning. Schreppel struck out three and walked two on the night, earning a no decision.

Travis Wood (WP, 10-4) was just as tough for the Dragons allowing a pair of doubles, one in the first and one in the second inning. South Bend also had a runner thrown out at home, as Steve Mena broke for home on a fist inning grounder and was caught in a run down between home plate and third base. Otherwise Wood dominated the Hawks over 6.0 innings striking out five and walking three.

Dayton scored the only run of the night off Silver Hawk reliever Jake Baxter (LP, 3-5). Eric Eymann knocked a ball into the left field corner for a one out double and Dayton had a runner in scoring position. A ground out moved Eymann to third with two down and a walk to number nine hitter Gerardo Cabrera extended the inning for Mike DeJesus, who singled to right to score Eymann with the only run of the game for a 1-0 lead. Jose Rojas (SV, 4) saved the win for Wood, who joined Carlos Fisher (12-5) as the first pair of Dragons pitchers since 2003 to post double digits in wins.

The Dragons jumped on Silver Hawks starter Donald Julio (ND) with two runs in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. Bradley Key led off the inning with a double to left and would score on the Bobby Mosby RBI single to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Josh Holden and Chris Denove singled with one down to load up the bases for DeJesus. Julio issued a free pass to DeJesus, forcing home the second run of the night.

South Bend rallied off of Dayton starter Rainer Feliz (ND) picking up single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to tie the game at 2-2. Ricardo Sosa led off the second with a single and stole second base. With two down Sosa scored on a fielding error by Dayton shortstop Eric Eymann to cut the lead to 2-1. Feliz was his own worst enemy in the bottom of the third walking Greg Thomson, the lead off hitter. Thomson became the third different runner to steal a base off Feliz when he moved into scoring position by swiping second. A Ground out moved him to third and a Feliz wild pitch scored Thomson, tying the game at 2-2.

The Silver Hawks picked up the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Bo Lanier (LP, 3-11). Mena led off the inning with a single and was moved up to second on a sac bunt. With two down, Leyson Septimo's single to left center scored Mena with the winning run.

The Dragons and Silver Hawks wrap up the five game series at Coveleski Stadium on Thursday night as Dayton wraps up the 2006 road schedule. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry all the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM. Dayton will send RHP Carlos Fisher (12-5, 2.86 ERA) to the mound for his final regular season start. South Bend will counter with RHP Matt Torra (0-1, 1.89 ERA). Thursday's first pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. All Dragons games in 2006 can also be heard live on the internet at www.daytondragons.com.
