Portland Beavers News Release

LAS VEGAS - Jared Wells gave up two runs in six-plus innings for his first Triple-A victory and Jon Knott hit his 22nd home and had five RBIs to lead the Portland Beavers past the Las Vegas 51s 11-5 in the first of a four-game series at Cashman Field Friday night.

Luke Carlin and Bobby Hill each drove in two runs, while Paul McAnulty, who scored three times, had a double and a triple among his three hits.

Knott, who leads the PCL in home runs and RBIs, has collected four or more RBIs in a game eight times this season. The first baseman added two doubles and scored twice for the Beavers, who have won five of their last seven games. Knott had a two-run double as the Beavers opened up a 3-0 lead after three innings. After Portland broke out for four runs in the seventh, Knott's three-run homer made it 11-3 in favor of the Beavers.

The Beavers tallied eight doubles, which tied a six-year franchise high. The team's eight extra-base hits in the game matched a season high.

Wells, who struck out three and gave up six hits for his first hit since joining the Beavers June 17, doubled, walked and scored two runs for the Beavers.

Delwyn Young hit his 13th home run and Andy LaRoche had three hits for the 51s (47-53).

Hong-Chih Kuo (1-2) took the loss for the 51s (47-53), allowing three runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings.

The two teams meet again Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: Ben Johnson started a major league rehab assignment with the Beavers Friday night, going 1-for-3 ... Johnson's addition was part of a flurry of moves late Friday. The San Diego Padres purchased the contract of Portland third baseman Justin Leone and recalled outfielder Terrmel Sledge. In turn, San Diego optioned right-handers Mike Thompson and Brian Sweeney to Portland ... catcher George Kottaras missed a third game after suffering a neck contusion from a foul ball Tuesday in Tucson.
