Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Mississippi Braves defeated the Birmingham Barons by the score of 3-2 on Tuesday evening, May 16th, in Southern League action at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
After Matt Esquivel delivered Gregor Blanco with an RBI double in the top of the first inning, Birmingham answered when Ricardo Nanita hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Chris Getz, in the home half of the first. A Blanco triple and Martin Prado's subsequent single in the top of the third provided the Braves with a one-run cushion. The Barons (18-22), however, responded in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run to tie the game at two apiece.
Mississippi (15-24) plated the winning run in the top of the fifth when Barbaro Canizares (2-for-3) plated Esquivel, who was hit by a pitch one batter earlier, with a run-scoring, two-base hit.
Matt Wright (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) struck out seven for the Braves while picking up the victory and improving his season record to 2-2. Luis Hernandez went 3-for-4 on the evening and Zach Schreiber pitched two scoreless innings for the save (1).
Robert Valido and Corey Smith each rapped two hits for Birmingham as starter Ryan Rodriguez (7.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K; now 1-4) suffered the loss.
Birmingham will continue its current ten-day, ten-game homestand by opening up a five-game series with the Montgomery Biscuits on Wednesday, May 17th, with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 a.m. Andy Sonnanstine (1-3, 4.05 ERA) is listed as the probable starter for Montgomery, while Ray Liotta (1-4, 3.59 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Barons.
