Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The New York Mets announced today that righthanded pitcher Philip Humber, the Mets' first-round pick in the 2004 draft, will start for the Binghamton Mets Monday night at Norwich, joining the team from High-A St. Lucie.

Humber (pronounced UM-ber), the third overall selection in last year's draft, is in his first professional season after agreeing to a contract in January paying him a Mets-record $3 million signing bonus. The righthander was 2-6 with a 4.99 ERA in 14 starts with the St. Lucie Mets, striking out 65 and walking 18 in 70 1/3 innings. The Carthage, TX native finished strong, going 2-1 with a 2.42 ERA in his last four starts with St. Lucie. He replaces Brian Bannister in the B-Mets rotation. Bannister was called up to Triple-A Norfolk Saturday.

The 23-year-old Humber joined the Mets organization after a standout career at Rice University in Houston, TX, going 35-8 with a 2.80 ERA in three seasons with the Owls. Rice won its first-ever College World Series in 2003, with Humber pitching a complete game against Stanford for the championship.

The B-Mets play a doubleheader at Norwich this afternoon, wrapping up the first half of the Eastern League season Monday night at Norwich. Binghamton returns to NYSEG Stadium Thursday, beginning the season's second half with a seven-game homestand against Reading and New Britain. Humber is expected to make his first NYSEG Stadium start Sunday afternoon vs. Reading.
