Hens sweep Braves

Richmond, VA - The Toledo Mud Hens swept a doubleheader from the Richmond Braves at The Diamond Friday, blanking the Braves 9-0 in each game. Toledo took advantage of big innings and strong pitching to send the Braves down to their eighth and ninth straight losses.

Toledo blew game one open with a four run first inning. Marcus Thames and Mike Hessman knocked in runs with singles and Alexis Gomez chased two home with a double. The Hens piled on three more runs in the second. Curtis Granderson ripped an RBI triple. Ryan Rayburn drilled an RBI double and a run scored on an error. The Hens tacked on two more in the seventh on a Rayburn RBI triple and an RBI single from Hessman. Jason Grilli pitched the distance for the shutout win. It was his third complete game and second shutout of the season. Daniel Curtis took the loss.

In game two the Hens jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a first inning Marcus Thames home run. Toledo busted the game open with a five run third inning that featured two runs walked in, RBI singles by Alexis Gomez and Thames, and a Jason Smith sac fly. The Hens tacked on three more runs with back to back seventh inning homers by Carlos Pena and Mike Hessman. Kenny Baugh worked six scoreless innings to earn the win. Zach Miner took the loss.
