July 3, 2005 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Anderson Hernandez drove in two runs and scored two more, and Ron Calloway hit a three-run home run to lift the Tides to a 7-5 win over the Syracuse SkyChiefs in front of 12,120 fans at Harbor Park Sunday night.
Syracuse jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, as first baseman Kevin Barker hit a two-run home run in the first and a solo home run in the third inning.
Norfolk rallied to tie the score at 3-3 in the third inning, as Hernandez drilled a two-run triple down the right field line off of Syracuse starter Dave Bush (2-1). Hernandez came in to score one batter later on an RBI single by Benito Santiago to knot the score at 3-3.
Norfolk would erupt for another big inning in the bottom of the fifth, scoring all of their runs with two outs. Hernandez started the rally with a single through the left side, and advanced to second on a single to left by Eric Valent. Another single by Santiago scored Hernandez, and Calloway put an exclamation point on the scoring with a deep drive over the wall in right for his fifth home run of the year, giving the Tides a 7-3 lead.
With two hits in the game, Anderson Hernandez has now hit in his first ten games with the Tides, and he now has a 20-game hitting streak spanning his promotion from Double-A Binghamton.
Jason Scobie (10-4) once again turned in a solid outing for Norfolk, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. With the win, Scobie became the second pitcher in the International League to reach the ten-win plateau.
The SkyChiefs threatened to tie the score in the 7th inning, pulling to within 7-5. Syracuse loaded the bases against Tides reliever Steve Colyer, but Norfolk reliever Tim Hamulack struck out Anton French swinging to end the threat.
Juan Padilla hurled a scoreless ninth for the Tides to record his ninth save of the year.
The Tides continue their homestand with a 6:15 contest against the SkyChiefs on Monday night. Jae Seo (6-2) is slated to take the hill for the Tides against Syracuse's Shaun Marcum (2-0).
