
Sea Dogs award scholarships in memory of Kevin MacDonald

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction with the Eastern League, Overhead Door, and the Kevin MacDonald Scholarship Fund awarded several scholarships to area students prior to Thursday's, June 29th Sea Dogs game against the Altoona Curve.
Kevin MacDonald graduated cum laude from Cheverus High School in 1995. At Cheverus, Kevin was an excellent student and top athlete. He was captain of the basketball and baseball teams, and he was an All-State Selection in both baseball and football. He was also captain of the Andrews Post American Legion Baseball team in 1995, and later helped coach the legion team to state championships in 1998 and 1999. In October of 2000, at the age of 23, his life was cut tragically short as he was shot and killed in Austin, Texas.
This scholarship in his memory is to recognize recent high school graduates from Portland based high schools whom excelled both on the baseball diamond and in the classroom. Leadership, sportsmanship, and academic achievement were the criteria used in determining the scholarship winners.
MacDonald's family along with Sea Dogs Officials made the on field presentations to this years winners.
The winners of the Kevin MacDonald Scholarship PURPLE Award, a $500 Scholarship are: Chris Burleson from Deering High School and Bryan Lavoie from Cheverus High School.
Chris Burleson from Deering is a true role model for other student athletes at Deering. He has excelled both on the field and in the classroom attaining a 3.94 GPA. Chris was also named Most Valuable Player in the Telegram League.
Bryan Lavoie from Cheverus High School has shown a great combination of academic excellence, athletic success, student leadership, and community service during his time at Cheverus. Bryan was a 3-year starter for Cheverus as both a pitcher and outfielder and even found time to work part time at Hannaford. Bryan was also named to the Bruce Glazier's Varsity Club.
The winner of the Kevin MacDonald Scholarship GOLD Award, a $1,000 scholarship is Chris McCallum from Portland High School. Chris earned the starting left field job this year with the Bulldogs and after a slow start went on to hit over .400 and is credited with providing a steady leadership to guide the Bulldogs as they stormed to the Western Maine Finals. On and off the field Chris displayed the characteristics of leadership and work ethic that is important to both an athletic and academic career.
This is the fourth season the Sea Dogs have give out these scholarships in memory of Kevin MacDonald.
