PORTLAND, ME-The Portland Sea Dogs got a game-tying solo homer from Chris Durbin in the bottom of the ninth, then won the game on a Brandon Moss RBI double in the 12th inning in a 9-8 win over the Altoona Curve Wednesday night at Hadlock Field in Portland, ME.
Durbin evened the game at 8-8 in the ninth with a solo home run off Curve closer Justin Kaye, who was tagged with his third blown save in his last four save opportunities. Then in the 12th against reliever Shane Youman (3-4), Moss drove in Stefan Bailie with a double to left to earn the Sea Dogs the win. Knuckleballer Charlie Zink (5-1) worked a 1-2-3 top of the 12th to pick up the win for Portland.
Altoona (42-35) missed out on a chance to gain sole possession of first place in the E.L. South after the Erie SeaWolves lost at home to Harrisburg Wednesday afternoon. The Curve and SeaWolves remain in a first-place tie in the division entering Thursday's action. Portland (40-34) moved to within ½ game of first-place Trenton in the Northern Division with the victory.
After the two clubs traded runs back-and-forth over the first seven innings of the game, catcher Carlos Maldonado gave the Curve an 8-7 lead in the top of the eighth with his fourth home run of the season-a solo shot off reliever Randy Beam. In the sixth, shortstop Javier Guzman cut into a 6-3 Portland lead with his first Double-A home run-a solo shot off Conor Brooks. Altoona then grabbed a 7-6 lead with three runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Tom Evans. Evans also scored on the play when he dislodged the ball from catcher Alberto Concepcion on a throw to home.
Altoona posted 15 hits in the loss, including three each from Maldonado and Jose Bautista. Evans, Guzman and Ray Sadler recorded two hits as the Curve lost for just the fifth time this season when outhitting their opponent.
The Curve and Sea Dogs will play the deciding game of their three-game series Thursday night at 7 PM as left-hander Paul Maholm (4-2, 3.39) will face Portland righty Jon Lester (5-1, 2.51).
