
Thunder LHP Smith sent to Triple-A

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that LHP Matt Smith has been transferred from Trenton to Columbus (AAA) of the International League. His roster spot will be left open for the time being.
Smith has appeared in 22 games for Trenton with a 3-4 record, 2.80 ERA. He has recorded 59 strikeouts with only 23 walks in 54 2/3 innings this season. Smith has been used mainly in relief, boasting a 3-1 record, 1.55 ERA, and a .171 opposing batting average out of the bullpen. He has excelled in June with a 2-0 record, 2 saves and a 0.40 ERA, while holding opponents to a .113 batting average.
Smith, the 25 year-old southpaw from Henderson, NV, signed with the New York Yankees on June 21, 2000 after being drafted in the 4th round out of Oklahoma State University. He has pitched parts of the last two seasons with Trenton, including a 4-4 record, 4.96 ERA for the Thunder in 2004.
Smith becomes the fifth Thunder player to be promoted this season, along with SS Andy Cannizaro, 2B Gabe Lopez, LHP Sean Henn and OF Melky Cabrera. Cabrera was sent to Columbus yesterday.
The Thunder continues a three-game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats tonight at Waterfront Park. Game time is 7:05 PM. Jeff Karstens (7-6, 3.53) starts for Trenton, which holds a 1 ½ game lead over Portland in the Northern Division.
