 Wheeling Nailers

Training camp day one

October 8, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

The Nailers opened training camp this morning with the players going through some off-ice training at 8:00 at the Howard Long Wellness Center. After the strength training the tryout moved on to the WesBanco Arena where the players started out slow with some warm up skating and stretching. After the slow start Head Coach Pat Bingham got the players moving with some 2 on 1 drills then moving it up to 3 on 2 drills. All the players were skating hard even though many were gasping for air at the end of each drill.

The players trained hard this summer and all seem that they are ready for this camp. Players like Jason Jaffray the team’s leading scorer last season was really moving out there capitalizing on almost every chance he had to score. There is a new look on the blue line this season, the Nailers have added some toughness. With players like 6’2” 229 pound defenseman Ray DiLauro and 6’2” 210 pound James Laux. Along with those new players T.J. Reynolds put on some muscle this summer and he looks like a new player weighing in at 225 pounds compared to his 215 last season. The defense will be a lot tougher and should be pretty hard to beat, but to back them up this season the Nailers have three solid goaltenders in camp all looking good.

The newcomer to the net is Dany Sabourin, he takes up most of the net with his 6’4” frame, not many pucks were getting by him early in camp. The second goalie is Joe Exter who looked sharp coming in to his second season after his near fatal head injury. And former Nailer Mark Scally returns to camp for his third camp with the team. The team looks good and has some solid players looking to make an impression on Head Coach Pat Bingham and earn a spot on this year’s roster.
