Greg Batters Named Assistant Coach
October 8, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
When Coach and General Manager Bryan Maxwell arrived in Victoria he had a couple of major goals in mind. The first was to assemble an entertaining, hard-nosed hockey team with a strong work ethic. He thinks he's done that. The second major goal was to find a partner to ensure that the team stayed motivated and on the same page. Well, Maxie's 2 for 2.
"I was looking for a person that would complement my personality, a guy that had the experience and understands what it takes to build a hockey team. I think I've found that in Greg Batters," says Maxwell. "Greg is also well known and respected within the Victoria hockey community. It's a great combination," added Maxwell.
Greg Batters is a name familiar to all in the Victoria sports community. Batters enjoyed an excellent four year career with the Victoria Cougars where he skated alongside such Cougar legends as Simon Wheeldon and Ken Priestlay. Batters split that final year between Victoria and the Moose Jaw Warriors before embarking on the next stage of his hockey career.
Batters then played three seasons with the Knoxville Cherokees of the ECHL where he put up good numbers and fulfilled a life long dream of playing professional hockey. "The Coast was a great league. We had a blast playing in Knoxville but it was time to come back to Victoria," recalls Batters.
Batters is excited about his new position. "I've stayed involved in minor hockey in the Victoria area (Greg was the Director of Hockey Operations for Victoria Raquet Club Minor Hockey) but an opportunity like this doesn't come along everyday. I can't wait to get started," he said.
Batters, who's full time job is as a firefighter with the City of Victoria, plans to travel as much as possible with the team and then be available whenever the team is home. "I'm lucky in that my job allows me fairly significant flexibility in my scheduling. I'm hoping to make 60 to 70% of the road trips with the team," says the married father of 2.
The Victoria Salmon Kings play their first regular season game October 22, 2004 against the Bakersfield Condors. They open their home schedule after an extended 14 game road trip on December 5, 2004 against those same Bakersfield Condors.
